Born in SC, my family was awash in African Spirituality on the island. With each successive generation after my Mom's, they shared less and less to those of us living "in town" in Charleston. She is to whom I prayed when my sons were in their teens (and today as well!) and I was at my whit's end. Whether one believes or not, it is comforting, praying to a deity that looks like me makes sense.
