@ chris mordaunt…I plan to do some writing on the Gullah legacy with which I was left as soon as I get my lazy ass in gear. Until then though, here are some book suggestions on the culture for you:

Black Majority by Peter H. Woods

Black Rice by Judith A. Carney

Gullah Culture by Wilbur Cross

Africanisms in the Gullah Dialect by Lorenzo Dow Turner

The South Carolina Rice Plantation by J. H. Easterly

Also, any works by Joseph Opala, noted for establishing the historical links between the indigenous people of the West African nation of Sierra Leone and the Gullah people of the Low Country region of South Carolina and Georgia in the United States.
