Great piece, Debbie and ditto for the multicultural legacy we've created! I'm Black, the husband's Italian-American (a society-identified white guy) and we have two brown sons, one a little browner than the other.

The oldest son's wife is part Native-American, part British. She was previously married to a Latino guy and has a daughter from that union whom my son adopted when they married and they share a little caramel daughter together. The other son's is Latina who also had been previously married to a Philippino guy with whom she had a son. Now they share a son who's indisputably everybody in the family's baby (spoiled rotten!!).

I've always hated that whole "melting pot" metaphor because it just smashes everybody into this one "gloopy thing,"that never really savors what each of us individually brings to the table. I describe my family as a vibrant tossed salad, with everybody bringing their own unique "flavors" to the bowl to produce something beautiful, enjoyable and so damned good for us all to have! And you're right, none of their friends care about color -- which for me, like you, means there's SO much hope for humanity.
