What are the odds?? I went to college in Alabama way-y-y-y back in the day with a young man from Eritrea!!
I believe in self-determination, particularly here in America where if you don't decide, white folks will certainly decide for you who you are! I am a Black American of African descent. I was born and raised here, so yes, I consider myself American. But because of how they brought us here, we DO have our own culture/language (the Gullah culture is thoroughly infused with, and molded by, West African culture), I cannot forget from whence, nor whom I came -- ON THESE SHORES. You've at least been to your village/country and know where it is -- I think that's something to cherish and try to hold onto. Maybe that's what your parents were trying to impart.
I don't see this country as a melting pot, never have, given the way they've treated and still do treat Black folk born and raised here. I prefer to see it as a tossed salad, brimming with unique flavors -- each bringing their own, distinct thing to the table to make a tasty, satisfying part of the meal that is America.
Unfortunately for those of us not white, that part of the meal still needs PLENTY work!
