Yep, I read that piece yesterday. Here I was thinking we'd made some progress. When I was on active duty in the Navy, we couldn't wear braids (which is how I preferred to wear my hair) at all. It was a written regulation for which you could get written up (put on report). I used to tuck them up under an Afro wig and even got shit for that! But they changed it eventually and now, when I go on the base, I see all those beautiful, Black women rockin' their braids and locs and it makes me so proud!
And when I first heard of the CROWN Act, I said, "Shit! These folk are finally getting what we've had to go through, just to work! Once this passes, my niece, her daughters and most importantly my granddaughter will be free to be who they are -- all the time." Silly me.
Funny how they're not forcing the makers of these hair relaxers many Black women use to maintain that Eurocentric, straight hair look -- to take that creamy crack off the shelves since they've been proven to cause cancer. I know, I know I'm expecting way too much from those greedy, racist asses. They don't give two shits about us, nor our well-being. {SMDH}
